Horton Hears a Who! (the book)

Horton Hears a Who!Dr. Seuss’s classic is a fantastic way to teach your kids about the importance of sticking up for the defenseless.  When Horton the Elephant hears the microscopic Whos on a speck of dust, he doesn’t stop to question whether his interests should override theirs.   Instead, he does everything in his power to protect them, because after all, “a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

This book recognizes in animals something our society, and certainly our legal system, does not: that sentient animals share characteristics (such as empathy, intelligence, and humor) with human beings and that they should be treated as “persons,” at least so far as they shouldn’t be killed for trivial concerns.
